California Senator Drops Plan for Cycle Smog Testing

A California state senator’s plan to require smog checks for motorcycles has been dropped.

The state Senate approved Senator Fran Pavley's (D) bill (SB 435) on June 1 after she agreed to scale it back. While the smog test provision was dropped, the bill still authorizes law enforcement to fine motorcyclists who remove the catalytic converters on their bikes.

As Dealernews reported in March, SB 435 would have required all motorcycles beginning with model year 2000 to have been tested starting in 2012.

Sen. Pavley represents Senate Dist. 23 - including portions of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties - in the California Legislature. She was elected to the Senate in Nov. 2008 and was immediately appointed to chair the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee.

The legislation now goes to the state Assembly for approval.
