Jones in top fifteen for MAP Raceways Yamaha

It was mixed results for the MAP Raceways Yamaha Junior Superstock team during today’s qualifying session for round three of the Metzeler National Superstock 600 Championship at Donington Park in Leicestershire.

The fastest rider in the four-man camp was Luke Jones who qualified in 15th position under clear blue skies and warm track conditions. The former British 125GP Champion was struggling for grip as he said: “Some people seem to be finding grip and others not. The first half is ok but I’m losing time on the slower sections of the track.

“I just have no front-end feel through the hairpin so I don’t feel confident. The trouble is if we make changes to improve the slow section then it impacts on the fast section. It’s all a bit of a compromise. I do feel confident for the race though as I know I race better than I qualify so a good start and try to go with them.”

Northern Ireland’s Nikki Coates was also further down the order than normal qualifying in 22nd. He has been working hard to improve his MAP Raceways Yamaha over the weekend.

Coates said: “I’m just struggling a bit today. I was running further up yesterday but I was just running in too quick. For some reason today I couldn’t hit the same lap time. We’ve made a lot of changes to the bike and I got held up on the last three laps so I didn’t get a chance to push. I just hope I can get my head down, cut through everyone and get a few points.”

Mike McLean has been chipping away over this race weekend to fine tune his machine and it has paid off despite qualifying in 23rd position. He said: “Today was better than yesterday and we have improved but so has everyone else. We have been working on the forks and gearing so the bike feels better. My aim is to score some points, I’m not where I want to be but points would be good.”

MAP Raceway’s Yamaha’s Southern Irish rider, Cody Nally, had an uphill battle once again as he had to set about learning the flowing Donington circuit. That, coupled with rear suspension issues, left him in 40th. He now goes forward to the shoot-out race to determine if he will take part in tomorrow’s race.

Nally said: “We’ve been having some suspension problems but we have now sorted that out. I have to take part in the shoot-out race but at least it will give me more time to learn the circuit.”

The Metzeler National Superstock 600 race will take place on Monday 25th May at 13:50 and the MAP Raceways Yamaha riders intend to pull in as many points as possible.
