SYM Bringing Best-Selling Scoot Style to the U.S.
What’s the most-sold motorized two-wheeler in history?
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. in 2008 commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Cub, the cumulative production of which last year reached 60 million units. Having been sold in more than 160 countries, the Cub series now is produced at 16 plants in 15 countries around the world and can be seen at every intersection in every country in Asia.
Well, this year, after benefiting from a 40-year relationship with Honda, Taiwan's Sanyang Industry Co. Ltd. (SYM) plans to bring a similar unit, the SYMBA, to the United States.
Scheduled to be available in May, the 100cc four-stroke SYMBA (MSRP $2,598) produces 6.7hp for a top speed approaching 50 mph. The unit will be distributed in the U.S. by Alabama-based Carter Brothers Mfg. Co. Inc.
SYM is a 48-year-old company that began building motorized two-wheelers in 1962 and now produces approximately 600,000 scooters and ATVs annually. Since ending its relationship with Honda in 2002, the company has manufactured its own product while also assembling automobiles for Hyundai, ATVs for BRP, and engines for numerous other OEMs.
Carter Bros. is in its fourth year of business as the exclusive importer/distributor of vehicles made by SYM. Supplying about 300 dealers nationwide, the company operates out of a 235,000 sq. ft. office-production-and-warehouse facility in the small town of Brundidge, Ala., 60 miles south of Montgomery.
The folks at Carter Bros. say it was a 2007 trip to SYM headquarters in Taiwan by U.S. journalists that brought the SYMBA to the States. During that trip, U.S. media told SYM officials that scooterists in the States would likely be enthused by such a model. Whether that proposed enthusiasm translates to sales remains to be seen.
