What is the MPG on a motorcycle?
"What is the MPG (Miles Per Gallon) on a motorcycle?" This seems to be the question many new motorcycle and scooter buyers seem to be asking lately. Another question salesmen have been asked is "Why don't you know for sure? Why do you only know an estimated MPG on particular bikes? Isn't there an industry standard? Why do car dealerships have MPG stickers as part of the information on a vehicle and motorcycles don't have this information?
For new gas conscious buyers the answer for why motorcycles do not have MPG information is because motorcycles are already gas efficient so EPA does not require this information to be put on motorcycles. So no there is no industry standard when it comes to motorcycle MPG, because larger vehicles differ in gas consumption EPA requires MPG be put cars, SUV's, trucks, etc. So the only way to know how many MPG your motorcycle uses is to fill the tank, take note of your odometer if you have one and once you run out of gas you know your bikes MPG.
Now for those of you who don't want to go thru all this, ask a Motorcycle tech or salesman. Why you ask? Well most of your salesmen and technicians have been around long enough to know the average MPG of the motorcycle or scooter they sell.
Is there such a thing as a non-gas efficient motorcycle? The answer is yes! Typically anything over 1600cc is no longer as gas efficient and is more equivalent to a small car.
With more and more consumers asking the question "What is the MPG on a motorcycle?" don't be surprised if this information becomes more available or part of a manufactures spec sheet. Until then ride and ride hard....unless your trying to save on gas (then again motorcycles are more gas efficient).....
